CHAPTER TEN

Solon’s team met them when they landed. Dawn was just breaking. A line of six jeeps rimmed the landing strip on the edge of a cleared field, dusty brown met at a harsh angle by verdant green. Noses faced outward for easy getaway, the modified trucks were weapons in themselves, loaded with armaments and tactical gear. Twelve of his best soldiers, dressed in camouflage and heavy with backpacks and weaponry, exchanged fist-bumps with each other as he descended the ramp.

Veritas’s finest, hand-picked from the oldest families with a few new potentials mixed in, trained since childhood in the ways of the ancient order. They bulged with muscles and resolution. To a one, they studied Vella descending behind him. By instinct, he puffed his shoulders and used his body as a shield against their attention. Anticipated frowns marred their complexions, and half of them moved their hands to hover over their guns. They had all been taught to recognize demons, not by their ugliness, as laymen might imagine, but by their unearthly beauty.

Everything about Vella proclaimed her a denizen of Hell. The graceful way she moved, like bamboo shoots in the breeze. Her flawless skin, seemingly without pores, poured over high cheekbones and delicate construction. The way her energy reached out across the field and wrapped his men in silence. She seduced without intention, temptation built into her DNA.

“Stand down.” He kept his voice level and firm as he eyed each man in turn.

Hands dropped, but frowns remained.

Erik, his second-in-command, stepped forward, fist over heart in salute. “Sir.” With a quick glance, Erik examined the demon before returning his flinty stare to Solon. Keeping his voice low, he asked, “Consorting with demons? Are you mad, Solon, or aching to join Brett?”

The reminder of his brother washed shame through him. What would Brett think of his fucking a succubus? Nothing good.

He cleared his throat and raised his voice so the other men could hear. “Vella was sent to us by Archangel Michael with instructions on how to find his blade. She works on the side of Heaven. If anyone has a problem following an archangel’s directives, tell me now.” Just in case, he stepped in front of Vella, blocking her from any sudden attack. Hopefully, she had the sense to remain behind him.

No such luck. He saw movement out of the corner of his eye. She waved at his line of men.

“Hi! I’m Vella. Nice to meet you.” She circled around him and held out her hand to Erik.

His second’s brows rose to his forehead. As his face screwed up in puzzled wariness, he glanced back at Solon.

“As I said, she comes on Heaven’s mission.” He grabbed Vella’s wrist, ignoring her gasp as he pulled her behind him once more. “Step back, Erik.”

When Erik obeyed, Solon could breathe again.

He could keep these men in line. He had to. “Archangel Michael has taken Lucifer’s throne in Hell.” Better that it sounded like a battle and not an agreement. These men were warriors. They would applaud and follow victory.
